Let’s take one more look at the Iceberg of Success. We like to focus on the top portion – the visible signs of success. But like an iceberg, the tip is only a small portion of the total. In fact up to 90% of an iceberg is under water, which is a perfect metaphor for Success!
I wrote last week about the value of failure in helping us reach the level of success we desire. Let's take a look at what else is under the surface of success.
Persistence is a must have quality for success. Most people give up too easily when faced with difficult challenges. In sales most give up after 1-2 calls, but statistics tell us that the average sale will take SEVEN contacts!! This pattern holds true in most of life and business. I have asked myself at what point should you quit, when are you just “hitting your head against a wall”? There are many factors involved in making that decision BUT remember doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results can be considered insanity. If things are not working and you aren't getting the results you desire, take a step back and look for a different approach. Be sure you have explored EVERY possible solution and remember the universe is unlimited.
Another important factor in Success is hard work. Very often we feel we are working hard when we are putting in long hours. But are we really? We need to make sure we are accomplishing the things that will actually help us create success. Understand the 80/20 rule – 20% of what we do creates 80% of the results! Learn to focus your time on the 20%. You may find the hardest work you do will not be work in the traditional sense of work. Instead the ‘work’ may center around spending time on your personal growth and development. Working on your personal growth and development can result in big rewards.
Success also requires dedication. There will be times when you will face failure and disappointment. What will keep you going through these difficult times is your dedication to yourself, your values, and your vision of what you want to create in your life. Be clear on what your vision of success is, write it down and look at it often. Don't be afraid to change it as your life changes and you grow.
Another ingredient necessary for success is good habits. Your habits will help you succeed or keep you stuck in failure. If you aren't accomplishing what you would like to, it can help to take a few days and observe just what you are doing with your time. Keep track of what you are doing as you go through your day. My guess you will find that you can improve your time management. I’m not recommending that you schedule every minute of your day. With balance in your life you will actually be more productive, and what good is success if you are too busy to enjoy it?
Sacrifice is listed on my iceberg image but what are we supposed to sacrifice and how much? Understand what your core values are, what is most important to you, and don't sacrifice those values. You will have to make choices (sacrifices) in how you spend your time and money. You may decide to exchanging your TV time for reading, listening to tapes, or creating a journal and give up something non-essential in your budget to invest the money in classes, a coach, or a workshop. If you can learn to identify the 20% that is important to your success and focus on those activities you will find time for the non-work things that are essential to your happiness. If we sacrifice all we truly love and value for success it will leave us empty and unhappy.
Balance can be achieved – be sure to hold that as part of your vision of success!
