I have always liked this quote of Einstein's. It seems pretty clear - if you have a problem you need to be able to look at it from a different perspective than the one from which you created it. Sounds simple doesn't it? BUT just how do you find or develop a different way of looking at your problem: one that will allow you to see the solution or at least different options. If you weren't looking at this issue with the mindset/perspective that created it you would already have the solution!!
We are often stuck in our beliefs and perspectives which keep us from finding a solution to the problem or chellange we are facing. However, you can develop powerful problem solving skills that will allow you to see solutions that were previously hidden from you. One very powerful exercise I use with my clients is to challenge them to question firmly held beliefs that are keeping them stuck and unable to make the changes in their life they desire. So often they are not even conscious of these beliefs or that they need to be questioned. I remembering challenging a client on her negative beliefs about money (and wealthy people). Her response was "doesn't everyone believe that". She seemed very surprised when I responded that I did not share that belief. Having another person to help you challenge your thinking can be very helpful but you can also learn to ask yourself some questions such as:
Is this absolutely true?
Has anyone else ever been in this position and been able to solve a similar problem? If so why can't you?
What if I looked at this problem from a different place. Perhaps I am standing in front of it but need to look at it as if I was behind it.
What if I picked a famous person I admire and looked at it from their prospect? How would they feel about this problem?
If my best friend, sister,or brother was in this position what advice would I give them?
It can be almost magical how a solution will just "show up" in your life when you are willing to challenge your old perspective and be open to the unlimited possibilities that exist in the Universe!
